(#BRD)... Series 3 Recently,couple of my colleagues who are seasoned agile practitioners shared their feedback with me about my posts regards to Business Requirements document(BRD) They mentioned that in most agile projects today, BRD is often seen as outdated & unnecessary. BRD's are replaced by user stories. Here is my take on it... User stories are typically written from end user perspective,focusing on what needs to be done. However, they may not capture "Why". BRD provides the context, rationale, helping teams understand bigger picture and ensuring alignment with business goals. Agile emphasizes on collaboration & flexibility. BRD ensures that everyone has a shared understanding of project scope, priorities, minimizing scope creep & mis-communication. Incorporating BRDs into agile processes doesn't mean reverting to waterfall methodolgoies. BRD provides a crucial layer of details that complements agile user stories, ensuring that project not only meet user needs but also align with broader business objectives. By integrating BRDs into agile workflows project can achieve balanced approach. To my colleagues who see BRDs are outdated. I hear you. As a PM, how do you decide if a written document is necessary for a release or not? If there is one thing that I absolutely learned during my tenure at InCred Financial Services - it is the importance of writing! InCred follows a culture of writing PRFAQs instead of traditional PRDs. There is nothing wrong with PRDs, but here is why I think PRFAQs are better: 1. PR (or Press Release) is always written keeping the end customer in mind. As a PM, there is nothing more important than to be clear on how the end user will benefit from the product/ feature! 2. Simpler (but not easier) format - PR is followed by a set of FAQs, that aims to answer key questions from the purpose of all stakeholders involved. That’s it! (Compared to PRD formats that very from company to company) This makes meetings a lot more productive, and stakeholder alignment easier! During my initial months, while I obliged to writing PRFAQs for major releases, I used to be reluctant to do the same for smaller ones. For me, the effort was not worth it! It took me some time & failed ‘so called small’ releases to really understand & realize the benefits. This is why it is important to write: - Writing brings clarity of thought - Countless examples when we were able to arrive at a solution when the problem was documented clearly - Writing ensures alignment - And makes sure everyone understands the same thing - Writing scales - In large orgs, written documents are the only efficient way of communication So to answer the question - ‘When should you write a document?’  The answer is - ALWAYS! Recently a post/meme is circulating on WhatsApp and Instagram, which makes real sense and makes sense hits hard. Any home loan taken for X amount, and calculated when it is fully paid, will result in the borrower making 2X of the loan amount taken. Irony- And still home loan is considered the cheapest of all loans. It is cheapest in terms of the percentage of interest charged, but since the quantum of loan is generally higher as compared to any other loans. As we all know, the interest amount is obviously calculated on the loan value (which is huge) and hence when you make the EMI payments in the initial years at least a major portion of the EMI payment is towards the interest very less goes to the principal portion. When we look at our principal outstanding after half of the tenure of the loan is over, I am presuming that what has been adjusted towards principal will not even be 30-35% of the loan amount borrowed which means during the initial years, you are paying interest towards the borrowed amount. Mind=blown now? That’s when the magic of prepayment comes to rescue. In one of my posts I have highlighted debt repayment strategies of which one such strategy is debt prepayment. And this is how a cheap loan makes you pay double of what you have borrowed. #Homeloan #interestrate #emi
